Painting

My approach to painting involves, to varying degrees, observation, memory, intuition, improvisation. I work and rework a painting, often simultaneously with others over days, weeks, months or years, until it arrives somewhere that satisfies me. As such, it is a product of intention and accident, skill and luck and time. I am mostly interested in the unpopulated natural worlds of land and seascapes, relying on the use of color, form, space and texture. I want the paintings to have a presence, to elicit inner states of calm, dread, sadness, hope. My paintings and prints often comprise order and chaos, reflecting the state of the world with its conflicts, destruction and also its enduring beauty. These events continue to influence my work in all media. In the end, painting is a response to my life and what is in it.

Here I post paintings from the past several years.
